Write a Personal Essay (4th-8th Grade)

The personal essay is increasingly becoming an important staple in many schools' language arts curricula. Although it is written as a factual account of a personal experience, it is written in a narrative style. In this course, students will read several exemplary student-written personal essays and compare and contrast them based on content, type (snap-shot vs. complete narrative), and elements of good writing, like dialogue, strong word choice, and essay structure. Students will brainstorm their own ideas and draft and revise a personal essay from start to finish.
