Description

Reading comprehension is crucial for academic progress across all subjects. This class builds on foundational skills to enhance student's ability to analyze and interpret more complex texts. Students will develop advanced strategies for using context clues, improving fluency, and expanding vocabulary. The course emphasizes critical thinking and the ability to draw connections between ideas within and across texts.

Students will explore grade-appropriate texts, including historical documents, scientific articles, folklore, and contemporary literature. They will engage in discussions, written responses, and projects that deepen their understanding and encourage analytical thinking.

Learning Objectives:

In this course, students will enhance their skills in:

Advanced vocabulary acquisition and usage
Phonics and pronunciation of more complex words
Comparing and contrasting multiple texts, including different genres
Using context clues and inference to understand nuanced meanings
Comprehension of literary and informational texts with increased complexity
Identifying main ideas, supporting details, and the author's purpose
Analyzing text structure and how it contributes to the overall meaning
Developing critical thinking skills through text-based evidence and reasoning

Instructor's Bio:

Marcie has been working with children and the arts for over 20 years. She is a licensed preschool and elementary teacher with a master’s degree in the creative arts-integrated curriculum. She has studied at NYU’s musical theater conservatory and travelled the world as a singer/songwriter with top 10 major label dance releases. She wrote and recorded a children’s album, and regularly performs children’s music all over New England.

Marcie wrote and directed a musical last year for child actors in Cambridge, MA. She has been teaching for Testing Mom since May, and is thrilled to be working with your children.

Hi Karen, thanks for creating this writing class. It helps my children to practice their essay lessons and to share their info with classmates.
