Class Details:
This class is for students who have completed two or more of any of The Testing Mom Debate Classes within the last year, who have a strong foundation in debate, who are looking for a challenge, and ready to take their skills to the next level! In this Advanced class, students will delve deeper into the complexities of debate and learn strategies in preparation for debate in a competitive setting.
We will practice debating in teams. Students will pair up in groups of two or more and square off on a common subject. Rather than save questions for cross-examination, opponents can ask immediately if permitted. Rules are more enforced and fallacies are studied more. Just because the research is done by two or more team members doesn't mean the responsibility lessens. Each member of the team will be assigned a different aspect of a social issue to research and each member will get a turn to speak with interruptions for questioning by the opponent. They will learn how to construct compelling arguments, anticipate their opponent's counterarguments, and effectively rebut their opponent's points.
This 5-session course helps to encourage working with teammates as well as encourage responsibility along with all of the benefits that come with a debate like critical thinking, and an advanced focus on logic and reasoning in argumentation. By the end of the class, students will have developed the skills and confidence necessary to participate in competitive debates and win.
