Many states' standardized tests currently include a Simulated Research Writing Task. This analytical writing assessment provides several nonfiction texts on a particular topic and a writing prompt. Students must analyze the texts, make a claim about the topic, and synthesize evidence from the texts to support their claim. Students will develop a thesis and write a five-paragraph essay that includes an introduction; well-developed body paragraphs that support the thesis and include text evidence with elaboration; citations; appropriate transitions; and a conclusion.
