Class Details:
Poems feed our souls and are meant to be relished with all our senses. Poetry taps into the imagination, connects to other forms of literacy, breaks silence, brings joy, and affirms self-esteem. Each class uses one or more specific poetry prompts as mentor texts, while the instructor leads an interactive discussion about the author’s purpose, and use of literary devices. Students will interact with the poems and expand their comprehension through visual art, movement, and improv activities. They will discover connections with the text and share their personal interpretation of the poems.
With guided instruction and interactive prompting, students will be scaffolded through brainstorming and writing their own poetry. They will practice listening and speaking skills while sharing their compositions at our "Poetry Cafe".
Class Objective:
Learners will use their senses to explore and write various styles of poetry; tapping into the imagination as they build and affirm self-esteem.
