Beginner Chess: An Intro. to the Basics (2nd-4th Grade)

Research has shown that learning the game of chess not only promotes a student’s cognitive development but also improves attention, and focus, and promotes a healthy self-image. This class is intended for anyone who knows nothing at all, or very little about the game of chess.

Chess is an exercise in memory, strategizing, and planning. Learning chess increases students' academic capacity in every area of their schooling. Get ready to have a great time learning the game of chess! 

Students will learn:

• The history of chess
• Chess terminology 
• How to set up the board
• The movement of every chess piece
• The value of each chess piece
• Keeping score
• Game rules/ How to play

Prior to Class:

1. Please open a free account at lichess.org with the following format applied to the username {First name (first letter of the last name)test5} for example "John Smith" would be JohnStest5. Please select a regular account (not a child account) because only the regular account is able to receive messages such as links that will be provided throughout the training.

2. It is recommended students use two devices. One device such as a desktop or laptop to do the zoom video part while another device such as an iPad, smartphone, or android tablet will be used to log on to lichess.org to actually play chess and make moves and play online.
