New York City Specialized High Schools


The Elite 8 high schools that require the SHSAT:

The following New York City schools are the only ones that admit students based solely on their scores on the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). They rank amongst the nation’s most competitive and demanding high schools, and are in order of rank.

1.  Stuyvesant High School is a top rated, public school located in Manhattan. It has approximately 3,300 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 23 to 1. According to state test scores, 99% of students are at least proficient in math and 99%  are proficient in reading.

2.  Staten Island Technical High School is a top rated, public school located in Staten Island. It has approximately 1,300 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 22 to 1. According to state test scores, 99% of students are at least proficient in math and 99% in reading.

3.  Bronx High School of Science is a top rated, public school located in the Bronx. It has approximately 3,000 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 23 to 1. According to state test scores, 99% of students are at least proficient in math and 99% in reading.

4.  High School of American Studies at Lehman College is a top rated, public school located in The Bronx. It has approximately 350-400 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. According to state test scores, 95% of students are at least proficient in math and 95% in reading.

5.  Brooklyn Technical High School is a top rated, public school located in Brooklyn. It has approximately 5,500 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 23 to 1. According to state test scores, 99% of students are at least proficient in math and 99% in reading.

6.  High School for Mathematics, Science & Engineering at City College is a top rated, public school located in Manhattan. It has approximately 475 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. According to state test scores, 95% of students are at least proficient in math and 95% in reading.

7.  The Brooklyn Latin School is a top rated, public school located in Brooklyn. It has approximately 650 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 17 to 1. According to state test scores, 95% of students are at least proficient in math and 95% in reading.

8.  Queens High School for the Sciences at York College is a top rated, public school located in Jamaica, NY. It has approximately 450 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 19 to 1. According to state test scores, 95% of students are at least proficient in math and 95% in reading.

Other Elite NYC High Schools:

Hunter College High School is also a NY elite high school, but it doesn’t require the SHSAT. The school creates its own exam, which is taken by sixth graders. Hunter College High School only accepts students for entry into seventh grade. You can view more information on the Hunter College High School website.

Fiorello H. LaGuardia  High School of Music and Performing Arts accepts students for entry into 9th and 10th grade. Admissions are based on student records and a competitive audition. The school’s curriculum consists of traditional subjects and demanding studio time in the child’s chosen discipline.
