Responding to a text in writing is a key skill used in classrooms and standardized tests to assess students' ability to understand and make meaning of what they read. In this combined reading and writing course, students will read both fiction and nonfiction texts and respond to prompts that require them to think critically about what they read and demonstrate key thinking skills like comparing/contrasting, summarizing, citing evidence from the text, etc.
Students will learn to "show what they know" by writing multi-paragraph essays that provide an introduction with a strong opening and thesis; body paragraphs with topic sentences, transitions, and appropriate details with elaboration; and a concluding paragraph that summarizes and neatly finishes the essay.
