Class Details:
Take a fantasy trip to the Arctic as we study this popular chapter book, "Polar Bears Past Bedtime," and its companion book, "Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Polar Bears & the Arctic." Students will practice essential nonfiction reading skills while learning about Arctic animals and their adaptations. We will make connections between the fiction text and further nonfiction mini-lessons. Students will have opportunities to practice discussion skills, write short essays, and study science.
We will read sections of the book together, discuss literary elements and devices, and analyze characters and how they are affected by the environment. Students will also have opportunities to do related nonfiction studies of environmental and historical aspects from the book.
Class 1:
Written Focus: Create a Field Journal for note-taking
Research/Exploration Focus-: Geography of the Arctic and Tundra, Arctic Fox
Discussion of the author's style
Class 2:
Research/Exploration Focus: Living in the Arctic and Animal Adaptations
Hands-on insulation science experiment and data collection
Class 3:
Research/Exploration Focus-: Polar Bears' Diet and Anatomy and their symbolism in the book Orca migration
Discussion Focus: Compare the figurative "on thin ice" and the literal "on thin ice."
Written Focus: Short essay- Describe your relationship with a particular animal.
Class 4:
Discussion: Contrast myths with reality. What elements of each exist in this book?
Science Focus: Northern Lights, Caribou adaptations
Written Focus: Northern Lights Poetry and Book Review
Supplies:
Students are welcome but not required to have a hard or digital copy of "Polar Bears Past Bedtime" and "Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Polar Bears & the Arctic." I will share all other material with them via screen share.
We will experiment during the second class. Students will be able to watch me do it, so materials are not required, but If they would like to experiment along with me, they will need the following items:

Instructor's Bio:
Marcie has been working with children and the arts for over 20 years. She is a licensed preschool and elementary teacher with a master’s degree in the creative arts-integrated curriculum. She has studied at NYU’s musical theater conservatory and travelled the world as a singer/songwriter with top 10 major label dance releases. She wrote and recorded a children’s album, and regularly performs children’s music all over New England.
